WHAT IS SALT?
Salt is necessary nutrient for human body function. Our body contains ions like calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, potassium, sulphur and magnesium, besides proteins, fats, carbonhydrates and water. From these ions sodium chloride, potassium and calcium provide the electrolyte balance of the body. If some are less or more than a specific value, it would cause diseases because of instability of electrolyte balance. Two of these ions, sodium and chloride are combined in salt.
Pure salt consists 40% sodium and 60% chloride. By the variety reasons, the big amount of chloride and sodium diminishing in human body is obtained from salt.
Salt is also used in many sectors for industrial purposes. Some examples are food, textile, leather, chemistry, metallurgy, industries and livestock. Salt must be refined from impurities, clean, dehydrated and flowable for industrial purposes too.
HOW IS THE SALT PRODUCED?
Billurtuz supplies the needs of raw salt from salt evaporation ponds Çamaltı district of İzmir. Çamaltı salt operation area is located near a protected area İzmir Bird Paradise, one of the rare regions which is free from environmental pollution.
Solar evaporation is probably one of the earliest methods used to produce salt. According to that process, sea water evaporates up to the saturation point in open basins, thanks to the action of the sun and wind. Crystallisation occurs in dedicated open basins as well, where the saturated brine is finally poured. Once the salt crust is formed, the exceeding water is eliminated before harvest. The raw salt may be further processed, including washing, drying, sifting and grading, if necessary and depending upon the requirements.
WHY SEA SALT?
Sea salt is naturally harvested and dried in the sun and sea salt contains 84 mineral elements (potassium, magnesium, calcium, sodium and more) that are essential in very small amounts for a variety of functions in the body.
These mineral salts and electrolytes are key players in enzyme production as well as immune system, adrenal and thyroid function.
WHAT IS REFINED SALT?
Refining of salt is basically an automated process to remove visible and invisible impurities found in raw salt. Refining system which is performed by Billurtuz, has been patented to International Salt Co.
This method involves complete dissolution of raw sea salt in water. Then dissolved salt crystals are formed from the solution under high temperature and vacuum. Consisted salt crystals are dehydrated at high temperatures. These white, pure and free-flow salt crystals are packed with full automated machines before reaching our tables.
For health and practical use, the refined salt produced by this method, with its whiteness, flowability, purity and homogeneous crystal structure is more superior than the salts produced by other methods.
What comes to mind when someone says the word "salt" ?
Probably most of you think “table salt”.
But “table salt” only covers %3-4 of total salt consumption all around the World. Let’s see where and why salt products are used !
Many of salt’s 14,000 uses are found where you’d least expect. If we name a few; As an important compenent into the production process of pharmaceuticals, brass, tires, bleach, paper, plastics, polyester, glass, soda ash, detergents…
Great quantities in de-icing, drilling, dyeing, water treatment, fishery, pool care and leather sectors. One of the most common ingredient in fast moving consumer products. And many more!
WHY IODIZED TABLE SALT?
Iodine, a trace element, is one of the most important minerals your body needs. When you don’t get enough iodine from foods such as fish, sea vegetables, and even iodized table salt, you can become iodine deficient. If you’re low in iodine, your body can’t make enough thyroid hormone, which regulates metabolism, body temperature, muscle building, and more.
Iodine deficiency is especially dangerous for pregnant and breastfeeding women. A mom’s inadequate iodine levels can lead to lower IQ, mental retardation, and even irreversible brain damage in a developing child.
